Egbin Power Plant Shuts Down After Contractor Dies During Repairs
Operations at Egbin Power Plc have been suspended following a fatal industrial accident involving a contractor during an underwater maintenance exercise.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the plant’s pump house, where specialised underwater work was being carried out. The shutdown has taken the facility offline from the national grid as safety checks and investigations continue.
The company confirmed the development and extended condolences to the family of the deceased, noting that emergency response and safety protocols were immediately activated after the incident. Relevant authorities have also been notified, while a review is underway to determine the exact cause.
Preliminary information indicates that the contractor was engaged in a recovery operation involving submerged pumping equipment when the machinery unexpectedly powered on. The individual was reportedly trapped during the incident.
The contractor was said to be affiliated with Browndive Underwater Services, a firm known for handling complex underwater operations in sectors such as oil, gas, and maritime services.
Following the accident, activities at the affected section were halted, leading to a broader shutdown of the plant to allow engineers and safety officials to conduct detailed assessments.
With an installed capacity of about 1,320 megawatts, the Egbin facility is a major contributor to Nigeria’s electricity supply, and its shutdown is expected to impact power generation levels while investigations and safety reviews are ongoing.
