King Charles to Visit U.S. in Effort to Strengthen Bilateral Ties Amid Tensions

March 31, 2026

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles and Queen Camilla will undertake a state visit to the United States in late April to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. The trip, planned on the advice of the British government, is intended to highlight historic connections and reinforce modern diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.

The visit comes amid strained UK-U.S. relations, primarily over Britain’s cautious approach to the Iran conflict and disagreements surrounding the Chagos Islands sovereignty deal. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has leveraged royal diplomacy to help smooth tensions, with King Charles previously hosting President Donald Trump during a high-profile visit to Britain last year.

The upcoming trip presents a delicate diplomatic challenge for the monarch, who will engage a U.S. president unpopular among Britons and navigate differences on key issues such as climate policy. The visit is scheduled ahead of a planned U.S. trip by Prince William during the summer World Cup.
