Kwara AGILE Trains Technical Service Providers on Environmental, Social Safeguards for School Rehabilitation
The Kwara State Government has launched a two-day Environmental and Social Compliance Training for Technical Service Providers (TSPs) under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project, ahead of the rehabilitation of 898 secondary schools across the state.
The training, flagged off by Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, Chairman of the AGILE Project Steering Committee and Commissioner for Education, aims to equip professionals with the knowledge of Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs), compliance protocols, and safeguard instruments to ensure safe and inclusive learning spaces.
Dr. Olohungbebe highlighted that the initiative, supported by the World Bank, forms part of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s strategy to improve educational infrastructure and empower adolescent girls. The project covers the construction of classroom blocks, the renovation of 500 junior and 398 senior secondary schools, conditional cash transfers, digital literacy, life skills training, and second-chance education for out-of-school girls.
Kwara AGILE Coordinator, Salami Adesina, stressed that TSPs—comprising civil engineers, architects, and quantity surveyors—will guide School-Based Management Committees to ensure quality delivery while complying with environmental and social standards. The training also addressed potential risks such as noise, waste, occupational hazards, and gender-based violence, emphasizing mitigation through proper planning, safety protocols, and grievance redress mechanisms.
The project, running from 2021 to 2028 in 21 states nationwide, aims to boost girls’ access to quality secondary education, with Kwara focusing on the rehabilitation of 898 schools and new constructions across 16 local government areas.
