President Tinubu Celebrates Obasanjo at 89
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the occasion of his 89th birthday, describing him as a towering figure in Nigeria’s history whose influence transcends the continent.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised Obasanjo’s enduring contributions to national development and democratic governance.
Tinubu highlighted the elder statesman’s service to the country as military Head of State from 1976 to 1979, during which he handed over power to a civilian administration in 1979. He also acknowledged Obasanjo’s return to leadership as Nigeria’s civilian president from 1999 to 2007, marking the beginning of the Fourth Republic.
The President commended Obasanjo’s role in preserving Nigeria’s unity, noting his leadership at the warfront and his imprisonment for standing against tyranny. He further recognized the former leader’s continued engagement in national discourse through his writings and public interventions, as well as his advocacy for Africa’s political and economic advancement.
As Obasanjo marks his 89th birthday on March 5, Tinubu prayed for continued good health, strength and wisdom for the former president, expressing hope that he will remain a guiding voice in Nigeria’s development and in service to humanity.
