FG Reaffirms Commitment to North-East Recovery

March 5, 2026

The Federal Government has reinforced its commitment to addressing food insecurity and strengthening resilience in conflict-affected communities across Nigeria’s North-East.

Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, announced on Wednesday in Yobe State during the flag-off and distribution of the Presidential Emergency Food and Nutrition Support intervention in Damaturu.

Describing the initiative as a strategic response to protracted humanitarian challenges, Dr. Sununu noted that years of insurgency and violent extremism have displaced thousands, disrupted livelihoods, and weakened household resilience. He also highlighted climate-induced issues such as desertification, erratic rainfall, and periodic flooding as contributing factors to worsening food insecurity.

“Despite the scaling down of support from some international development partners, the Federal Government remains resolute in ensuring vulnerable Nigerians are supported,” Dr. Sununu said, commending President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing social protection under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The intervention targets internally displaced persons, vulnerable returnees, women-headed households, malnourished children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. It includes the distribution of food items, nutrition commodities, and essential medical supplies, with transparency and accountability systems established in partnership with the Yobe State Government.

Governor Mai Mala Buni expressed appreciation for the Federal Government’s support, highlighting Yobe’s launch of the first State Policy on Internally Displaced Persons and successful registration of 488 households comprising 1,699 individuals in Geidam Local Government Area in collaboration with the NCFRMI and UNHCR.

The flag-off ceremony symbolized strengthened collaboration between the Federal and Yobe State Governments in promoting food security, resilience, and sustainable poverty reduction in the region.
