Ogun Local Government Denies Election of New Monarch, Warns Against False Claims
Ipokia, Ogun State — The Ipokia Local Government has clarified that no election has been conducted and no candidate has been selected as the new Oniko of Ikolaje Idiroko, warning the public against premature claims to the throne.
In a statement on Tuesday signed by the Secretary to the Local Government, Johnson Babajide, the council explained that the stool became vacant following the death of His Royal Majesty, Oba John Olakunle Ojo JP (Afiditi II). The succession process is ongoing in accordance with traditional customs and the Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State.
The statement noted that the Odunfa Ruling House, next in line according to rotational arrangements, conducted its nomination exercise on February 4, 2026, at the Ipokia Local Government Secretariat under the supervision of council officials, security agencies, and family representatives. Three nominees were presented: Prince Olagoriye Jonah Ariori, Prince Sunday Adekanmbi Olayode, and Prince Olabowale Ade.
The next step is for the Ikolaje Idiroko Council of Kingmakers (Afobaje) to select a candidate from among the nominees.
The local government emphasized, “No election has taken place, and no candidate has been selected, elected, or declared as the new Oniko of Ikolaje Idiroko at this time.” It warned that anyone claiming otherwise could be acting unlawfully, potentially causing public disorder and violating the law.
Residents, ruling house members, and supporters of the candidates were urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and patient as the lawful succession process continues.
