Portugal Set to Return to Formula 1 Calendar in 2027 and 2028

December 17, 2025

Portugal will return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2027 and 2028, with the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimão confirmed as the replacement for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.

Formula 1 organisers confirmed that the Algarve International Circuit, officially known as the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, will host races for two seasons following Zandvoort’s scheduled exit from the calendar after the 2026 campaign.

Portimão previously staged Formula 1 races in 2020 and 2021, when the global calendar was reshaped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 4.6-kilometre circuit is renowned for its dramatic elevation changes and technical layout, which pose a significant challenge to drivers and often produce competitive racing.

Portugal has a long history in Formula 1, having hosted its first Grand Prix in Porto in 1958, with subsequent races held at Monsanto and Estoril over the sport’s 75-year history. More recently, Portimão gained global attention in 2021 when Lewis Hamilton secured his 92nd career victory at the circuit, surpassing Michael Schumacher’s record for the most Formula 1 wins. Hamilton also won the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimão in 2020, making him the only current driver to have claimed victory at the venue.

Formula 1 President and Chief Executive Officer, Stefano Domenicali, welcomed the circuit’s return, describing it as a boost for both the sport and its fans in Portugal.

“I’m delighted to see Portimão return to the Formula 1 calendar and for the sport to continue to ignite the passion of our incredible Portuguese fanbase,” Domenicali said. “The circuit delivers on-track excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag, and its energy lifts fans out of their seats. The interest and demand to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix is the highest that it has ever been.”

The confirmation comes as Formula 1 continues to adjust its calendar amid growing global demand to host races, with competition among countries and circuits intensifying.

The 2026 season will proceed with Zandvoort still on the calendar, after which Portimão will take its place for the 2027 and 2028 championships.
