N’Assembly Fine-Tuning Legislation on State Police, Says Akpabio
The National Assembly is working on legislation to establish a national commission that would regulate state police operations, training, promotions, and conduct, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said on Friday.
Speaking after leading the National Assembly leadership on an Eid homage to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, Akpabio said the aim is to create a “positive” state police structure that strengthens security while ensuring professionalism, accountability and uniform standards across states.
The Assembly is also considering increasing the Police Trust Fund allocation from 0.5 per cent to one per cent of consolidated revenue to improve police infrastructure and equipment nationwide.
Akpabio said insecurity has improved under Tinubu, noting that insurgents no longer occupy territory or hoist flags in any part of Nigeria. He acknowledged ongoing “guerrilla warfare” and attacks on soft targets such as schools, churches and mosques, and urged citizens to help identify criminal elements in their communities.
The Senate President also praised Tinubu’s economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy, unification of exchange rates, and overhaul of tax laws, saying they have put Nigeria “on a trajectory of growth.” He highlighted the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Lagos-Badagry-Sokoto corridor as transformative infrastructure projects, and called for higher crude oil production to boost foreign exchange earnings amid increased local refining.
