Waldrum Reveals Reasons Behind Super Falcons’ Early Exit From Paris 2024
Following the Super Falcons’ disappointing exit from the women’s football event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, coach Randy Waldrum has provided insights into the factors that contributed to the team’s early departure from the tournament.
The Super Falcons, who are nine-time African champions, failed to secure a victory in their three group-stage matches, losing to Brazil, Spain, and Japan. Their elimination came as a blow to their supporters and highlighted several challenges faced by the team.
In a recent interview, Waldrum attributed the team’s poor performance to a combination of inadequate preparations and injuries to key players.
“We prepared for all our group opponents based on the fact that we haven’t had a lot of time,” Waldrum said. “Preparation efforts were significantly impacted by visa issues, which delayed the arrival of several invited players to the camp.”
The coach further explained that injuries to key players, including Ashleigh Plumptre and Halimatu Ayinde, disrupted the team’s training schedule.
“We missed the last window before the Olympics, and so we missed 10 days of good training before the Olympics,” Waldrum added.
The team’s struggles in Paris were marked by their inability to overcome the high-level competition, with each game highlighting the challenges posed by their disrupted preparation and injury setbacks.
