UnIlorin VC Calls for Responsible Electricity Use Amidst Soaring Costs.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, has expressed concern over a significant increase in the institution’s monthly electricity bill, which has surged from N70 million to N230 million.
In a communication addressed to university staff and students, Egbewole attributed this surge to the recent hike in electricity tariffs by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), emphasizing that such a substantial increase is unsustainable and poses challenges to the university’s budget.
Egbewole underscored the urgent need for a thorough reassessment of the university’s current electricity consumption patterns. He urged both staff and students to embrace responsible electricity usage practices and support the administration’s efforts to implement cost-saving measures. Additionally, he highlighted the management’s commitment to exploring alternative power supply options and negotiating favorable terms to mitigate the financial strain posed by the escalating electricity bills.
Furthermore, as part of proactive measures, Egbewole disclosed that ongoing construction projects in various faculties would incorporate provisions for alternative power sources demonstrating the university’s dedication to ensuring uninterrupted power supply amid rising costs.
