Trump Picks Senator James D. Vance as Vice Presidential Running Mate
Former President Donald Trump, now the official Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election, has chosen 39-year-old U.S. Senator James D. Vance as his vice presidential running mate.
This decision was announced on Monday at the Republican Party’s national convention in Milwaukee.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed confidence in Vance, stating, “As Vice President, J.D. will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our Troops, and will do everything he can to help me MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”
The convention, held at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum, commenced just two days after Trump survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. It also followed a significant legal victory for Trump, as a federal judge dismissed one of his criminal prosecutions.
Trump is scheduled to formally accept the Republican nomination in a primetime address on Thursday, positioning himself to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the November 5 election.
Current opinion polls indicate a closely contested rematch between Trump, 78, and Biden, 81.
Amid ongoing claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election, Trump has not committed to accepting the results of the upcoming election if he were to lose.
Following the recent assassination attempt, Trump indicated a shift in his acceptance speech focus towards national unity rather than emphasizing differences with Biden.
“This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” Trump told the Washington Examiner. Despite the attempt on his life resulting in a minor injury, Trump remains determined to move forward with his campaign.
Trump’s legal battles continue, with pending prosecutions in Washington and Georgia related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. A recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling granting him immunity for many actions taken during his presidency may impact these cases.
Looking ahead, Trump faces a September sentencing in New York for charges related to attempting to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels just before his 2016 election victory.
“This dismissal of the Lawless Indictment in Florida should be just the first step, followed quickly by the dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts,” Trump declared on Truth Social, referencing ongoing legal proceedings involving himself and his supporters related to the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.
The Republican National Convention continues to be a focal point as Trump and Vance prepare to campaign as the party’s presidential and vice presidential candidates, respectively, heading into a contentious election season.
