Super Eagles Urged to Secure 2026 World Cup Berth
Gernot Rohr, the former head coach of the Super Eagles, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s current position in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, stressing the imperative of securing a spot in the upcoming global tournament.
Having missed out on qualification for the previous World Cup held in Qatar, Nigeria finds itself grappling with a challenging start to the qualifiers, having managed only three draws and suffering one defeat in four matches.
This lackluster performance places the three-time African champions second from the bottom in Group C standings.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s recent struggles, Rohr emphasized the significance of qualification, describing it as crucial for a footballing powerhouse like Nigeria.
He highlighted the disappointment of missing out on consecutive World Cups, stating, “If they miss another one, for such a football country with the best players in Africa, it would be a little bit shameful.”
Rohr, who recently guided Benin Republic to a 2-1 victory over his former team, emphasized the need for realism amidst the challenges faced by the Super Eagles.
“They must be realistic and say that it’s only three points in four games,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of immediate improvement and focused efforts from both players and the football federation.
