Sudanese Army repels RSF Attack, Senior Commander Killed
Sudan’s military reported the death of Ali Yagoub Gibril, a senior commander within the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), an organization sanctioned by the United States. Gibril, who held a significant role within the RSF in al-Fashir, was killed during clashes with Sudanese army forces.
The military’s official statement indicated that the confrontation occurred as the RSF attempted an attack, which was subsequently repelled by Sudanese army units and allied “joint forces” comprising former rebel factions from Darfur.
Al-Fashir, a major city in the region, remains outside the control of the RSF, which has besieged it, raising concerns about escalating violence and broader intercommunal conflicts. International pressure has intensified following events in Al-Fashir, with the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, calling urgently to an end to the city’s siege.
Although, the prolonged conflict has exacerbated Sudan’s humanitarian crisis, leading to widespread displacement, a resurgence of ethnic tensions in Darfur linked to the RSF and its allies, and a sharp rise in severe food insecurity across the country.
