Four die as building collapses in Ilorin, residents warned over dilapidated structures

Four members of the same family have died after a three-storey building collapsed at Popo Giwa in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Tuesday. The incident occurred at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, beside Gogoro Mosque, with eight members of the family initially trapped under the rubble. The Kwara State Fire Service and other emergency agencies later confirmed that four people were rescued alive, while four others were found dead. The rescued victims and bodies of the deceased were taken to hospital as emergency responders continued operations at the scene.

The State Fire Service said the cause of the collapse had not yet been established, while the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, said the collapsed section was the boys’ quarters of the three-storey building. The police, emergency agencies and local government authorities have warned residents to take signs of structural weakness, leakages and other defects seriously and leave buildings considered unsafe. They also advised property owners to address deteriorating structures and developers to use quality materials and qualified professionals to prevent further building-related deaths.
