Nationwide Protest: Toke Makinwa Condemns Vandalism Amid Demonstrations
Toke Makinwa, the Nollywood actress and media personality, has condemned the vandalism and property destruction that marred the ongoing nationwide protest against severe economic hardship in Nigeria.
On Thursday, August 1, Nigerians across the country took to the streets to voice their frustrations over the country’s worsening economic situation.
However, reports emerged that some individuals took advantage of the peaceful demonstrations to loot and damage both government and private properties.
In response, Makinwa took to her X account to express her disapproval. She highlighted the irony of targeting fellow Nigerians who are also struggling under the same economic pressures.
“Destroying properties and stealing from your fellow Nigerians who are passing through the same hardship is not right at all. This is very sad,” Makinwa tweeted.
Addressing critics who interpreted her comments as blaming the protesters, Makinwa clarified her position. “I did not say the stealing and vandalism was done by protesters,” she explained. “The people who have their things stolen are Nigerians too, going through the same hardship. What have they done to deserve this?”
Meanwhile, veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, better known as Charly Boy, has weighed in on the protest. Charly Boy praised the efforts of the demonstrators, emphasizing that the movement is far from over.
He urged Nigerians to maintain their pressure on the government to address their grievances.
In his statement posted on X, Charly Boy said, “Brave, strong, and determined Nigerian youths, una make me proud today. First: Una congratulations on a job well done. But our work just start.”
He continued, “As most of us don wake from our slumber in the realization say gofment no care for us, no send us, we no go gree for people wey no gree for us. We must keep fighting to retrieve our stolen future.”
Charly Boy stressed the importance of continuing the protest until the government acknowledges the people’s demands.
“Let’s keep the pressure up, because this devilish government must understand that the tide is changing. They must never feel safe again, unless dey start doing the needful. The Salvation Of Nigeria Lies In The Hands of its Exceptional Youths. I Twale for Una.”
The protests, which began on Monday, have seen significant participation across various states, reflecting the widespread dissatisfaction with current government policies.
