Kwara Governor Urges Youth to Embrace Peace, Pursue Goals at International Youth Day Event

August 13, 2024

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has called on Nigerian youth to remain peaceful, avoid vices, and focus on activities that drive them toward their life goals.

Speaking at an event commemorating International Youth Day in Ilorin, the Governor, represented by Commissioner for Environment and Forestry Nafisat Musa Buge, praised Kwara youths for their commitment to peace and resilience in challenging times.

“Today, as we celebrate International Youth Day, I hope you will gain new insights and resolve to enhance your lives through education, ethical media use, hard work, and positive thinking,” AbdulRazaq said.

He urged the youth to build a supportive network of friends and prioritize dignity, self-respect, and good health over negative influences such as drugs and crime.

International Youth Day, observed on August 12, recognizes the importance, power, and contributions of young people to society.

This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” aligns with the Governor’s commitment to empowering the youth and leveraging technology for sustainable growth.

The event, organized by the State Ministry of Youth Development, featured presentations from notable figures including Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Development; Dr. Tayo Simon Arinde from the University of Ilorin; and former Commissioner of Information Mr. Ben Dutoye.

AbdulRazaq expressed pride in the youth’s choice of peace during recent national protests, promising continued support for programs and projects aimed at improving their lives.

“Your response to national events has set a benchmark for how young people should address sensitive issues,” he said.

The Governor highlighted various initiatives such as the Innovation Hub, Sugar Film Factory, Visual Arts Centre, and Garment Factory, which are designed to provide young people with opportunities in line with global trends.

The event was attended by Kwara House of Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Yakubu Salihu Danladi, represented by Hon. Rukayat Shittu; Minister of Youth Development Dr.

Jemilah Bio, represented by Mallam Shakiru Akorede; State Commissioner for Youth Development Hon. Ndanusa Usman; President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Kwara Chapter, Comrade Nasiru Yusuf Ali; members of the NYSC; and various youth organizations.

Rt. Hon. Danladi emphasized the integral role of youth in building a sustainable future and encouraged them to leverage digital innovation for development.

Dr. Olohungbebe urged the youth to engage in community service, despite the lack of immediate financial rewards, and to use social media constructively.

Dr. Arinde commended the Governor for his commitment to youth development, while Mr. Dutoye called for increased support for volunteer groups to sustain the spirit of volunteerism.
