ASUU Criticizes Tinubu Administration’s Labour Policies
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ilorin chapter, has denounced the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing it as the most hostile towards labour policies in recent history.
This declaration came during a press briefing following a peaceful protest organized by ASUU to voice concerns over the state of the nation and the educational sector.
Addressing reporters, Comrade Felix Akanmu, the branch chairman of ASUU, University of Ilorin, expressed disappointment in the Tinubu-led administration’s approach to labour issues. He lamented the government’s failure to engage ASUU formally despite repeated efforts.
“Barely a year ago, there was optimism that the present administration would address our grievances promptly, based on the democratic credentials of some of its key members. However, they have proven to be more anti-labour than any other government,” Akanmu asserted.
He criticized the government for neglecting negotiated welfare packages, the revitalization and adequate funding of educational institutions, and for allegedly politicizing university governance structures.
“The government’s actions have been marked by frustration, blackmail, and starvation tactics aimed at undermining our legitimate demands,” Akanmu claimed.
ASUU’s grievances include the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), withheld salaries, overdue promotion arrears, and the contentious Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS).
In response to these issues, ASUU has issued a four-week ultimatum to the Federal Government, warning of an impending strike if their demands are not met. Comrade Shehu El-Rasheed, chairman of ASUU at the Federal University of Kashere, Gombe State, reaffirmed this stance during a protest at his institution.
“We demand immediate action on our outstanding issues, failing which we will commence a nationwide strike,” El-Rasheed declared to the press.
Similarly, ASUU members at Benue State University (BSU) also protested what they described as neglect of public universities under the Tinubu administration. They called on concerned Nigerians to intervene before the situation deteriorates into another protracted industrial action.
