Iraqi Court Sentences Seven Drug Dealers to Death, Including Foreign National

June 10, 2024
An Iraqi court has handed down death sentences to seven drug dealers, including one foreign national.
The Supreme Judicial Council announced the verdict, stating that the Central Criminal Court had convicted and sentenced the individuals for trafficking narcotic substances.
While the statement did not specify the nationality of the foreigner, it emphasized that all seven convicts were found guilty of importing and exporting drugs from neighboring countries.
Iraq has long grappled with the challenge of drug trafficking, exacerbated by the chaos and conflicts that have plagued the nation since the U.S. invasion in 2003.
The prevalence of drugs has posed a serious threat to public health and security, with Iraqi governments struggling to effectively address the issue amidst ongoing instability.
In May 2023, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani underscored the importance of combatting the drug trade, labeling it as a primary source of funding for terrorism.
He emphasized that the circulation of drugs often thrives in the shadow of terrorism, highlighting the interconnected nature of these illicit activities.
