India Condemns “Hellhole” Remark Shared by Trump, Calls It Insulting and Uninformed
India has strongly criticised comments referring to the country as a “hellhole,” which were reposted by United States President Donald Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social.
The remark, originally made by conservative US radio host Michael Savage, described India and other countries in harsh terms while arguing against US birthright citizenship policies. Trump shared the post without adding his own comment.
Reacting to the development, India’s Ministry of External Affairs described the statement as “obviously uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste,” adding that it does not reflect the reality of India–US relations.
A ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, said ties between both countries remain strong and are based on “mutual respect and shared interests,” despite the controversy.
The United States Embassy in New Delhi also sought to downplay the tension, noting that Trump had previously described India as a “great country” and referred to its leadership in positive terms.
However, the comments sparked backlash within India, with opposition leaders calling the remark “extremely insulting” and urging the Indian government to formally protest to Washington.
The controversy adds to ongoing debates around immigration rhetoric in the United States, where Trump has repeatedly taken a hardline stance on immigration policy. Critics say such language risks straining diplomatic relations, while supporters argue it reflects concerns about immigration control.
Despite the backlash, both governments have continued discussions on trade cooperation and bilateral relations, which remain strategically important for both countries.
