FIFA President Reassured About World Cup in Mexico Amid Violence
Mexico City, 25 February 2026 – FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed confidence in Mexico’s readiness to host World Cup matches despite recent violence linked to the killing of cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera.
Speaking in Barranquilla, Colombia, Infantino said he was “very reassured” and described preparations as “spectacular.” Mexico, along with the United States and Canada, is set to host the tournament from June 11 to July 19.
The violence in Guadalajara followed Oseguera’s death, with at least 74 people killed and multiple states affected. Authorities and FIFA insist fans and players are safe, while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the situation is “gradually returning to normal.”
Guadalajara will host four group-stage matches and co-host playoff matches with Monterrey. Some international teams are monitoring security, but Mexican officials maintain all venues remain on schedule.
