Nigeria Paying Heavy Price for Underfunding Education, Says Osinbajo
Former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has warned that Nigeria is paying a high price for neglecting its schools, describing the education sector as “broken” and underfunded.
He spoke on the theme “Building generational strength for educational institutions in Nigeria” at the 94th Founders Day celebration of Igbobi College, Lagos, where he highlighted the importance of foundational education in shaping future leaders, noting that habits and ethical instincts are formed early in life. In line with this vision, the Igbobi College Old Boys’ Association (ICOBA) launched a ₦10 billion Endowment Fund to revitalize the school, improve infrastructure, and introduce advanced learning technologies, as the fund will be professionally managed to ensure accountability. Represented by Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, the state government expressed support for initiatives that strengthen the leadership pipeline and reduce long-term social costs.
