Atiku Accuses National Assembly of Delaying Electoral Act to Rig 2027 Polls
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has alleged that the delay by the National Assembly in amending the Electoral Act is a calculated move to rig the 2027 general elections. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the last election said loopholes in the Electoral Act 2022 contributed significantly to what he described as the brazen rigging of the 2023 polls and also made it difficult for petitioners to successfully pursue electoral cases in court.
In a statement on Thursday, Atiku accused lawmakers, particularly the Senate, of deliberately frustrating the amendment process. He said correcting the flaws of the 2023 election requires an urgent review of the existing law to guide the 2027 polls and future elections. Atiku added that a recent report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) indicts the Senate and highlights the need for legislative responsibility, warning that failure to amend the law promptly would amount to an attempt to rig the election long before votes are cast.
