Accra Set to Host 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships
The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) has confirmed that the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships will take place from May 12 to May 17, 2026, in Accra, Ghana. The announcement comes following formal approval from Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation.
Preparations for the championships will begin on May 8 with the arrival of CAA administrators and technical officials. The CAA Council is scheduled to arrive on May 9, followed by a council meeting and the arrival of participating teams on May 10. A technical meeting will take place on May 11, one day before the competition officially begins.
The event will conclude on May 17, with all teams departing Accra on May 18. The schedule was coordinated with the academic calendar of the University of Ghana, Legon, which will be on vacation during the championship period.
The Ghana Sports Minister is expected to officially welcome the CAA council members and deliver a keynote address before the competition begins. A Memorandum of Understanding between Ghana and the CAA is expected to be signed by January 8, 2026, pending the Minister’s availability.
The Local Organising Committee for Accra 2026 will be inaugurated on December 18. The championships are set to bring together top athletes and officials from across Africa, positioning Accra as the center of continental athletics during the event.
