Typhoon Bualoi Leaves Several Dead and Missing in Vietnam
Typhoon Bualoi has struck Vietnam, leaving multiple people dead and at least 17 others missing as strong winds and heavy rains battered several provinces.
The national weather agency reported waves as high as eight metres when the storm made landfall in the early hours of Monday, causing widespread flooding and damage to homes.
Disaster management officials confirmed deaths in Hue City and Thanh Hoa province, while additional fatalities were reported in Ninh Binh, where collapsed houses killed six people, and in Danang, where one person also lost their life. Reports from international news agencies put the death toll between nine and more than a dozen.
In Quang Tri province, strong winds broke the ropes of a fishing boat sheltering from the storm, leaving nine crew members adrift. Four managed to swim to safety, while five remain missing. In Gia Lai province, families also reported losing contact with eight people on a fishing trip.
More than 347,000 households lost power before the storm made landfall. Authorities evacuated more than 28,500 residents and shut down four airports in central provinces, leading to widespread flight cancellations.
By late Monday morning, the storm was moving across Nghe An province and heading into Laos.
Bualoi had already caused at least 20 deaths in the Philippines over the weekend, mostly from drowning and falling trees. It is the second major storm to hit Asia in a week, following Typhoon Ragasa, which left at least 28 people dead across the Philippines, Taiwan, and China.
