Zaria’s ASUU Protests Government Neglect, Threatens Strike Over Unmet Demands
The Ahmadu Bello University Zaria branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) staged a peaceful protest in Zaria, Kaduna State, expressing grievances over alleged neglect by the government.
During the protest rally organized on Friday, ASUU’s branch Chairman, Comrade Haruna Mohammed Jibril, highlighted several key demands which included the renegotiation of the 2009 federal government and ASUU agreement for adequate funding for revitalizing public universities, and the settlement of outstanding entitlements.
Moreover, ASUU emphasized the need for the reinstatement of governing councils whose terms have not expired and the reconstitution of those whose tenures have lapsed. They highlighted Ahmadu Bello University’s financial challenges, exacerbated by underfunding and high electricity tariffs, which cost the university approximately N10 million daily.
Jibril called on the Federal Government to prioritize reducing electricity tariffs to alleviate financial strain on universities nationwide. ASUU warned that if their demands are not met, the Federal Government would bear responsibility for any ensuing strike.
