World Athletics Blocks Favour Ofili’s Switch From Nigeria to Turkey

April 16, 2026

World Athletics has rejected Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili’s request to switch allegiance to Turkey, dealing a setback to her hopes of competing for the European nation at the 2028 Olympics.

The decision was announced by the World Athletics Nationality Review Panel on Thursday after reviewing the application submitted by the Turkish Athletics Federation.

According to the panel, approving the request would go against key regulatory principles guiding international athletics, and therefore, the transfer was not permitted.

Ofili, who previously competed for Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics, had sought the switch to Turkey amid ongoing career and administrative disputes.

The ruling means she remains ineligible to represent Turkey at major international competitions.
