US Sanctions Sudanese RSF Commanders Over Al-Fashir Siege
The United States has imposed sanctions on three commanders of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces for their roles in the 18-month siege and capture of Al-Fashir, the U.S. Treasury Department announced on Thursday.
An independent United Nations investigation reported that mass killings of non-Arab communities during the operation showed hallmarks consistent with genocide.
The sanctions target the commanders for their direct involvement in the violence and human rights abuses, highlighting Washington’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for atrocities in the Darfur region.
The Treasury Department’s action comes amid ongoing international scrutiny of Sudan’s paramilitary forces and the humanitarian crisis resulting from prolonged conflict in the country.
