UNILAG Releases Sexual Harassment Prevention Tips for Female Students

July 27, 2026

The University of Lagos has issued safety guidelines to female students as part of efforts to prevent sexual harassment and rape on campus.

The advisory by the university’s Student Affairs Division encourages students to avoid isolated places with men, be cautious when accepting drinks, reject pressure, and remain alert to their surroundings. It also advises students against seeking unnecessary favours from men and encourages them to set personal boundaries.

The guideline, which includes a message advising female students not to “shake hands anyhow with any man,” has generated public reactions.

UNILAG said the campaign is aimed at promoting personal safety and awareness among students following previous reports of sexual assault within the institution. The move comes as a rape allegation involving a lecturer and a student remains before the Ikeja High Court.
