UNICEF Urges Vigilance Against Cholera Spread in Nigerian Schools
In response to the recent cholera outbreaks in Lagos and other states across Nigeria, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a pressing call for enhanced measures to safeguard school children from the disease.
Celine Lafoucrier, the Chief of UNICEF Lagos Field Office, emphasized the critical impact of cholera outbreaks on children and the youth population.
In a statement released on Monday, Lafoucrier highlighted the heightened health risks faced by vulnerable groups, particularly children and young adults attending schools.
“The outbreaks pose significant threats, with children being particularly susceptible to severe dehydration and high mortality rates,” Lafoucrier stated.
She underscored the urgent need for comprehensive sanitation practices, improved access to clean water, and regular handwashing with soap and clean water to effectively combat the spread of cholera within school environments.
Furthermore, Lafoucrier called for widespread awareness campaigns across Nigeria to educate the public about cholera outbreaks and preventive measures.
These efforts, she stressed, are crucial to mitigating the impact of the disease and ensuring minimal disruption to the academic calendar.
UNICEF’s appeal comes amidst ongoing efforts by health authorities and local communities to contain and manage the cholera outbreaks across various states in Nigeria.
