Ukraine Orders Two-Month Limit for Frontline Troops
Ukraine’s military leadership has introduced a mandatory time limit for soldiers serving in frontline positions, as part of efforts to address mounting strain on troops amid the prolonged war with Russia.
The directive, issued by Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, sets a maximum of two months for continuous deployment in forward combat areas. It also requires that troops be rotated out within one month after completing their frontline service.
The move comes as Ukrainian forces face ongoing pressure from Russian advances and grapple with manpower shortages. Reports of soldiers spending extended periods under intense combat conditions have triggered public concern and criticism over troop welfare.
Military authorities say evolving battlefield dynamics, particularly the widespread use of drones, have made operations more dangerous and logistically complex. The increased presence of drone surveillance and strikes has created highly exposed combat zones, complicating supply delivery and troop movement.
Under the new policy, commanders are expected to ensure proper conditions for troops during deployment, including access to food, ammunition, and medical care. The directive also mandates medical evaluations as part of the rotation process.
The decision follows public outrage sparked by reports and images showing the harsh conditions faced by some frontline units. Ukrainian forces have struggled with recruitment challenges, declining enthusiasm for enlistment, and concerns over training and support systems.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has continued to oversee military restructuring efforts as the conflict enters its fifth year, with officials seeking to balance operational demands with the need to protect personnel and sustain morale.
