UEFA Position on Russia Ban Remains Unchanged, Says Ceferin
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin stated on Thursday that European football’s governing body is not currently considering readmitting Russia into international competitions, following recent comments by FIFA chief Gianni Infantino suggesting he supports easing the ban.
Ceferin said UEFA’s position is clear and has not changed, but the organization continues to review the situation daily. Russia was expelled from all UEFA club and international competitions in 2022 after it invaded Ukraine, missing qualifying for the 2022 men’s World Cup, Euro 2024, and the upcoming World Cup in North America.
The International Olympic Committee has recommended allowing Russian teams to compete at youth level, and Infantino argued the ban has not achieved its goals, stating it has created frustration and that young Russian players should be allowed to participate in European competitions. His remarks drew strong criticism from Ukraine, which called for the ban to remain until Russian aggression stops.
Ceferin, who met and posed for photos with Infantino at the UEFA Congress in Brussels, said the world is changing rapidly and left open the possibility of future adjustments, emphasizing that UEFA will continue monitoring developments closely.
