Tyla Makes History With Double Win at 2026 American Music Awards
South African music star Tyla has made history at the 2026 American Music Awards after winning two major categories at the prestigious ceremony.
She clinched the Best Afrobeats Artist award, beating strong competition from top African acts including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema, and Moliy.
Tyla also won the Social Song of the Year award for her hit single “Chanel”, becoming the only African artist to win at the 52nd edition of the AMAs.
The singer entered the ceremony as the most nominated African act in AMA history, with four nominations, further strengthening her global profile.
Released in October 2025, “Chanel” became a global commercial success, dominating streaming platforms and reportedly surpassing hundreds of millions of Spotify streams, while also earning nominations in other major categories, including Best Music Video and Best Female R&B Artist.
Tyla first rose to international fame in 2023 with her breakout hit “Water”, which fused R&B with South Africa’s Amapiano sound. The track went viral on social media and later entered the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100, propelling her debut album and global career.
Her latest AMA success adds to a growing list of achievements, including a Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance for “Water” and multiple MTV Video Music Awards wins in 2024 and 2025.
The singer is also expected to appear at the 2026 BET Awards, where she has received two nominations, including a historic Video of the Year nod, while preparations continue for her second studio album expected later in the year.
