Trump delays 50% tariffs on Canadian goods for three days

August 19, 2026

United States President Donald Trump has delayed the planned 50 percent tariffs on nearly 20 billion dollars worth of Canadian imports for three days, saying the move is to allow both countries finalise a trade deal. Trump announced the delay shortly before the tariffs were due to take effect, following intensified negotiations with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and trade officials. Carney said substantial progress had been made, although some issues remained unresolved.
