Trump Backs Down on Greenland, Europe Sees Path to Agreement

January 23, 2026

Tensions over Greenland eased on Thursday as President Donald Trump appeared to back down from threats to seize the semi-autonomous Danish territory, following discussions with NATO leader Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The talks produced a “framework of a future deal” on the Arctic island, with NATO set to strengthen Arctic security in the first half of the year. While details of a final agreement remain unclear, European leaders expressed cautious optimism. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the development as a positive step, welcoming Trump’s remarks as moving relations in the right direction, even as Denmark maintained that its sovereignty cannot be negotiated.
