Tobi Amusan Cleared for Olympics as CAS Dismisses Doping Charges
Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the 100m hurdles, has been given the green light to compete in the Paris Olympics after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed appeals against her clearance of a doping offence on Friday.
The 27-year-old athlete had faced charges in July 2023 for missing three anti-doping tests within a 12-month period. However, the Disciplinary Tribunal of World Athletics cleared her of these charges.
Despite this decision, both World Athletics and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed against the ruling to CAS.
CAS, in a statement, announced that its panel “unanimously acknowledged that the Athlete committed two filing failures but did not confirm the existence of a missed test, alleged by WA and WADA, which would have been the third Whereabouts Failure committed within a 12-month period.”
Amusan had previously set the world record of 12.12 seconds at the world championships in Eugene, Oregon, in July 2022, where she also clinched the title. In the subsequent world championships held in Budapest last year, she finished sixth overall.
According to World Athletics’ anti-doping rules, any athlete who fails to declare their whereabouts for a doping test on three occasions within a year faces a two-year ineligibility period.
With CAS’s decision now clearing her of the doping charges, Amusan can focus on preparing for the upcoming Paris Olympics, aiming to add to her impressive achievements on the global stage.
