Tinubu urges governors to pass State Police Bill, implement local government autonomy
President Bola Tinubu has called on state governors to pass the State Police Bill into law to strengthen national security. Speaking at the APC caucus meeting at the Presidential Villa, he also urged party leaders to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy.
Tinubu emphasized the need for leaders to be flexible and actively engaged at all levels of government. He highlighted his discussions with US and European counterparts, expressing confidence that the State Police would be approved, citing the support of his party.
On local government autonomy, Tinubu stated that it must be effective and fully funded, with direct allocation of resources to local governments in compliance with the Supreme Court’s judgment.
The President acknowledged the limited participation of women at the meeting and encouraged expanding women’s involvement in future gatherings.
Vice President Kashim Shettima noted that the APC now has 28 governors and a strong presence across all six geopolitical zones, which the party believes will secure victory in the 2027 elections. APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda highlighted the party’s successful membership drive, defections from opposition parties, and internal democracy initiatives.
APC Governors Forum Chairman and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma commended Tinubu for his economic policies, emergency declaration on insecurity, and cooperation between the Federal Government and state governments.
