Tinubu, Obasanjo, Otti Shower Encomiums On Ironsi’s Life Of Sacrifice

UMUAHIA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Governor Alex Otti and other prominent Nigerians have paid glowing tributes to Nigeria’s first military head of state, late Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, describing him as a patriot who sacrificed his life for the unity of Nigeria.

The tributes were made at the 60th memorial anniversary of the late head of state held in Umuahia. President Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, described Ironsi as an outstanding professional soldier whose career was marked by discipline, courage, loyalty and commitment to duty. Tinubu noted that Ironsi assumed leadership at a time of immense political uncertainty and national anxiety. Though his tenure was brief, he showed firm commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability and maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian State. The President added that the values of patriotism, discipline, selfless service, integrity and national unity exemplified by Ironsi remain relevant today

.In their goodwill messages, former President Obasanjo, former Chief of Army Staff General Azubuike Ihejirika, and Dame Patience Jonathan expressed satisfaction with the gathering to honour a distinguished patriot who paid the supreme price in service to the nation. They stated that commemorating such sacrifices would inspire future generations to embrace selfless service and commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress. They also urged Nigerians to remain united and uphold the values Ironsi stood for.

Governor Alex Otti, the host, called for greater national unity, merit-based leadership and patriotism. He described Ironsi as a selfless leader whose sacrifice should continue to inspire Nigerians. Otti emphasized that Nigeria is better off as one indivisible nation united by a common purpose and shared destiny, and noted that his administration continues to promote merit over ethnicity. Ironsi’s daughter, Louisa, presented her father’s citation and described him as a true nationalist whose leadership was anchored on discipline, meritocracy, patriotism and the professionalisation of the Armed Forces. She said the wreath-laying ceremony was to honour a life devoted to Nigeria and to preserve the legacy of a leader who made the ultimate sacrifice for national unity.
