Terrorists Attack Military Base in Borno, Civilians Feared Killed
Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have reportedly attacked a military base in Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area, killing an unknown number of civilians and abducting several women. The attack occurred around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, and involved gunmen on motorcycles and gun trucks operating for hours.
ASP Nahum Daso, spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, confirmed that many residents remain missing and that preliminary reports suggest some were abducted and taken toward the Mandara Mountains. He stated that the military successfully repelled the attackers but cautioned that the full toll of the incident is still being assessed.
Eyewitnesses reported that nine soldiers were killed during the assault and that insurgents overpowered troops before attacking civilians. Parts of Ngoshe town were set on fire as the attackers retreated. Many residents have fled to nearby Pulka town for safety.
“The insurgents attacked the base in large numbers, which allowed them to overpower the soldiers and infiltrate the community to abduct many women,” a resident, who spoke anonymously, said. “Many of our people ran to Pulka town to take refuge for fear of another attack.”
The community is reportedly calm as of Thursday, with the military now in control. Investigations continue, and authorities have yet to verify if a chief Imam in the area was harmed during the attack.
Residents have appealed for urgent security measures to prevent further attacks in the region.
Borno State Police Command and the military continue efforts to stabilize Ngoshe and ensure the safety of its inhabitants.
