Storm in Greece Kills One, Floods Homes and Disrupts Travel
At least one person has died, and dozens of homes were flooded after heavy rain and gale-force winds swept through Greece, authorities reported on Thursday.
The victim, a man in the seaside town of Nea Makri, northeast of Athens, was reportedly swept away by floodwaters and trapped under a car while attempting to cross a flooded street.
Fire brigades received hundreds of emergency calls to rescue people trapped in floodwaters and clear roads blocked by fallen trees as the Erminio storm battered Athens and several Aegean islands.
On Crete, winds carrying dust from North Africa turned the skies an unusual orange, disrupting flights. Ferry services from the port of Piraeus to some islands were temporarily suspended.
Authorities continued to pump water from flooded buildings, remove debris, and repair damaged infrastructure. Greece, which has faced destructive floods and wildfires in recent years, has seen such extreme weather events attributed to climate change.
