Senior Customs Officer Passes Away During House of Representatives Investigative Hearing

A senior officer from the Nigeria Customs Service on Tuesday collapsed and subsequently passed away during an investigative hearing by the Public Account Committee of the House of Representatives.
The incident occurred around 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, when the officer suddenly experienced health complications while responding to questions during the engagement.
Despite swift intervention from first responders and medical personnel at the National Assembly Clinic, their efforts were, unfortunately, unable to save his life.
At the time of this report, the identity of the deceased officer had not been disclosed out of respect for the privacy of his family.
In response to the heartbreaking event, Akin Rotimi, spokesperson for the House of Representatives, issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the officer’s passing and emphasizing the decision to withhold the officer’s name at this time.
The statement conveyed, “It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of a respected member of the Nigeria Customs Service who was participating in an engagement with a House Committee. Out of respect for the family, we are not disclosing the name of the officer at this moment.”
“The House of Representatives extends sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this challenging time,” the statement continued. “We acknowledge the significant contributions made by the officer to the Nigeria Customs Service and our nation.”
“The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD., expressed his condolences, stating, ‘We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of a dedicated public servant. Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time.'”
The House assured full cooperation with relevant authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the officer’s passing and to ensure all necessary procedures are followed.
