Senators Back Akpabio’s Return as Senate President, Declare No Vacancy
Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno and Senator Cyril Fasuyi have declared support for Godswill Akpabio’s return as Senate President in the 11th National Assembly, insisting that the position is not open for contest. The lawmakers made their positions known during Thursday’s plenary, with Monguno extending his support to the Deputy Senate President and other principal officers. Akpabio subsequently asked senators to indicate their support, and no audible opposition was recorded during the exchange, although the next Senate leadership will be determined through a formal election.
During the same session, Akpabio cautioned Nigerians against taking legislative debates out of context, following public reactions to discussions on the Suicide Prevention Bill 2026. He urged commentators to distinguish individual contributions from the Senate’s final decisions and warned against politically motivated interpretations. Akpabio also rejected attempts to associate terrorism with any religion, insisting that public discussions should avoid stigmatising religious communities and should consider the circumstances surrounding suicide and mental health.
