Senate to Table Electoral Amendment Bill as Recess Ends – Lalong

September 18, 2025

As the National Assembly prepares to resume from its recess next week, the Senate has confirmed that the Conference Report on the Electoral Amendment Bill 2025 will be presented for discussion. Senator Simon Bako Lalong, Chairman of the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters, made this known during a meeting with the European Union Elections Follow-up Mission in Abuja, stating that the bill is a “working document” requiring broad stakeholder input to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.

Lalong noted that the joint committee has held multiple meetings and plans to hold a retreat and public hearing before the final version of the bill is considered. He commended the EU for its continued support in advancing Nigeria’s democracy and confirmed ongoing consultations with INEC, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders in the amendment process.
