Senate Blames Borno Suicide Bombing on Failure of Intelligence
The Senate has attributed the recent suicide bombings in Gwoza town, Borno State, to a failure of intelligence by security forces. Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this assertion during a plenary session on Wednesday.
In his contribution to the debate on a motion regarding the incident, Akpabio highlighted the need for a reassessment of the strategies employed by the nation’s security apparatus.
The motion was sponsored by the Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Ali Ndume. Ndume, in his lead debate, pointed out that areas such as the Mandara Mountains, Sambisa Forest, and the Lake Chad region remain strongholds for terrorists.
He emphasized the urgent need for more effective measures to be put in place to combat the ongoing threat.
The Senate’s resolutions included a call for the Federal Government to direct the military to rethink its conventional strategies in fighting insurgency and other crimes.
They advocated for the deployment of modern technology and scientific tactics to enhance the effectiveness of military operations. Lawmakers expressed concern that relying solely on conventional methods, such as the deployment of troops, has proven insufficient.
They noted that terrorists continue to employ non-conventional approaches to kill Nigerians and destroy their means of livelihood, thus necessitating a shift in strategy.
The Senate’s deliberations underscore the critical need for an overhaul of current security measures to better address the evolving threats posed by insurgents in the region.
