President Tinubu’s Statements Over Nigerians Suffering Draw Criticism from Atiku, Labour Party

June 19, 2024

President Bola Tinubu’s recent remarks addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and poverty have sparked criticism from opposition figures and political parties, notably former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Labour Party (LP).

Tinubu, speaking in Lagos during a visit from a National Assembly delegation, acknowledged the prevalence of poverty and suffering in Nigeria. He emphasized that while Nigeria faces these issues, it is not alone in grappling with such challenges.

He urged a renewed focus on enhancing infrastructure, combating banditry and terrorism, and improving economic conditions, stressing the importance of a transformed national value system for progress.

In response, Atiku Abubakar, through his Special Adviser Paul Ibe, criticized Tinubu’s remarks as deflecting responsibility and failing to provide concrete solutions to the issues at hand.

He accused Tinubu’s administration of exacerbating poverty through policies that prioritize opulence over the welfare of Nigerians. Atiku underscored the need for strategic measures to tackle security threats and economic hardships rather than mere acknowledgment of existing problems.

Similarly, the Labour Party (LP) condemned Tinubu’s statement, describing it as a mockery of Nigerians’ plight. LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, expressed disappointment, stating that Tinubu was elected to alleviate poverty, not amplify it.

Ifoh criticized Tinubu’s administration for what he described as failed economic policies that deepen the country’s economic woes.

“We are yet to get over the billions appropriated for the renovation of the President and Vice President’s lodges, now we hear they want new jets to join the Presidential fleet,” Ifoh stated, highlighting what he perceives as misplaced priorities.

President Tinubu’s remarks were made during a session where he also appreciated the support of the National Assembly leadership in facilitating governmental initiatives aimed at addressing national challenges. He called for a collective effort to change Nigeria’s value system and foster inclusive development.
