President Tinubu Mourns Death of Former House Speaker Agunwa Anaekwe
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Chief Agunwa Anaekwe, former Speaker of the House of Representatives during Nigeria’s Third Republic. Anaekwe died at the age of 69.
In a condolence message on Tuesday, the President described Anaekwe as a courageous and disciplined democrat who provided critical parliamentary leadership during a turbulent political era and stood firmly against military rule. He noted that the late legislator’s tenure symbolised steadfast resistance to the excesses of dictatorship and highlighted his commitment to defending democratic values.
Tinubu recalled Anaekwe’s continued contributions to nation-building beyond his time in parliament, including his role in founding the Action Congress in Anambra State in 2006 and serving as the party’s first interim state chairman. He was also a member of the All Progressives Congress National Caucus.
The President commended Anaekwe’s life of service, noting that it would continue to inspire future generations of lawmakers and public administrators. Tinubu extended condolences to Anaekwe’s family, the government, and the people of Anambra State, praying for comfort and eternal rest for the deceased.
