President Tinubu Calls Crucial Meeting with Labour Leaders on Minimum Wage Negotiations.
President Bola Tinubu has scheduled a crucial meeting with Organised Labour in Abuja this Thursday to advance discussions on a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
According to a senior labour source speaking to newsmen, the President has extended invitations to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for the meeting, slated to take place at the Aso Villa in the capital city.
The meeting aims to resolve differences between the government and private sector’s proposed ₦62,000 wage and the Organised Labour’s demand for ₦250,000. This follows President Tinubu’s announcement during his Democracy Day address on June 12, 2024, where he pledged to send an executive bill to the National Assembly on the matter.
Recently, during the 141st meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), Tinubu and Vice President Kassim Shettima engaged with governors and ministers from all 36 states to deliberate on the new wage proposal. The Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by the President, had earlier postponed discussions on the memo to allow for broader consultations with stakeholders.
The upcoming Thursday meeting signifies a renewed push towards consensus and legislative action on the national minimum wage, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing workers’ welfare concerns.
