Presidency, Peter Obi Clash Over Proposed Purchase of New Presidential Jet

The Federal Government and Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, have clashed following Obi’s criticism of the Federal Government’s intention to acquire new aircraft for the presidential fleet amid economic challenges in Nigeria.
Obi denounced the proposed purchase as insensitive, pointing to the prevailing economic hardships exacerbated by government policies.
He argued that resources should be directed towards addressing pressing issues such as insecurity, poverty, and healthcare, rather than acquiring luxury items.
In a swift rebuttal, the Presidency, represented by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser t on Information and Strategy, defended the decision, questioning Obi’s stance.
Onanuga accused Obi of insensitivity towards the safety and welfare of the President, suggesting that using aged aircraft jeopardizes the President’s security.
He emphasized that the current presidential plane, acquired during former President Obasanjo’s era over 20 years ago, has become unreliable and poses risks during flights.
“Why will any right-thinking person still want the President to move around in it?” Onanuga queried. He underscored that the National Assembly had recommended the purchase of new aircraft, further legitimizing the government’s decision.
The House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence recently endorsed the procurement of new aircraft following an investigation into the status of the presidential air fleet.
This move came after plans to sell three aircraft from the fleet were initiated.
Reacting to the criticism, Peter Obi expressed disappointment, emphasizing that the government’s priorities should align with the needs of the populace, particularly in times of economic distress.
He highlighted the contrast between government expenditures on luxury items and the urgent requirements of citizens grappling with poverty and insecurity.
“This decision highlights the disconnect between the government and the people,” Obi remarked in a statement. He stressed the need for a compassionate use of resources to alleviate citizens’ suffering and address fundamental challenges facing the nation.
Obi called for a redirection of focus towards education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, urging national leaders to prioritize national interests over personal luxuries.
