Police to Launch Digitalized Central Motor Registry to Enhance National Security

July 13, 2024

The Nigeria Police Force has announced plans to commence the enforcement of the digitalized Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) on July 29, 2024, aiming to revolutionize the motor vehicle registration system and strengthen the nation’s safety and security framework.

The e-CMR is a state-of-the-art, real-time online database of motor vehicle data, designed to support police investigations, operational activities, and combat vehicle-related crimes such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery.

This transition to a digital system will streamline documentation and verification processes related to vehicle ownership and transactions.

Under the directives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), services including change of ownership, license number, engine, and chassis/body will become seamless.

The e-CMR system will ensure validation of vehicle authenticity and ownership, enhancing the ability to track and recover stolen vehicles effectively, and preventing the purchase of stolen vehicles by unsuspecting buyers.

Ahead of the enforcement date, the IGP has mandated extensive public awareness campaigns about the e-CMR, detailing its requirements, processes, and enforcement procedures.

Members of the public are encouraged to obtain their digitalized CMR certificate online at https://cmris.npf.gov.ng. For inquiries, individuals can contact the CMR Command Centre at FHQ Abuja (08117777666, 09169892000) and FHQ Annex Lagos (08117777555, 09169891000), with technical support available at cmrtech@npfcmr.ng.

The Nigeria Police Force emphasizes its commitment to leveraging technology and strategic approaches to enhance public safety and national security.

The enforcement of the e-CMR is seen as crucial in creating a safer environment for vehicle ownership and reducing incidents of vehicle theft by eliminating the market for stolen vehicles.

In a statement by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, vehicle owners, and users are urged to promptly embrace and participate in this initiative for optimum safety and security.
