Philippine Congress Dismisses Impeachment Complaints Against President Marcos
Manila, Philippines — The Philippine House of Representatives has dismissed impeachment complaints against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., a largely expected outcome as his allies hold a majority in the lower chamber.
The vote follows a recent decision by the House justice committee, which had already rejected two complaints citing insufficient evidence. Marcos faced accusations of betraying public trust, corruption, and constitutional violations, including his handling of flood-control projects and a controversial decision involving his predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte, at the International Criminal Court.
During Tuesday’s vote, 284 lawmakers voted to dismiss the complaints, while only eight supported impeachment and four abstained. Under Philippine law, no further impeachment proceedings can be filed against Marcos until next year.
The focus of impeachment efforts now shifts to Vice President Sara Duterte, who is facing new complaints after surviving a similar bid last year.
Since the restoration of democracy in 1986, only one Philippine president, Joseph Estrada, has been formally impeached, though his trial ended abruptly in 2001
