Peter Okoye Apologises, Calls Out Twin Brother ‘Rudeboy’ Over Language Saga

LAGOS — Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has apologised for his remarks about Nigerian languages, saying his comments were misunderstood and were not meant to disparage the country’s languages or culture.

The former P-Square member came under fire after responding to a social media user who asked if his children, who speak French fluently, could also speak Igbo. In his reply, Mr P questioned the relevance of Nigerian languages, a statement that triggered widespread criticism online. In a statement posted on X on Wednesday, Mr P admitted that his response offended many people and said he takes full responsibility for how it was received. He clarified that he was referring to Nigeria’s indigenous languages broadly and not specifically to Igbo language or culture.

He explained that the controversy started from an innocent post about his children’s ability to speak French, which also made him consider buying a home in Paris, as he further accused his twin brother, Paul Okoye, also known as Rudeboy, of exploiting the situation to damage his reputation. He alleged that Rudeboy deliberately twisted his words and has repeatedly used opportunities to criticise him publicly. He referenced an open letter he wrote two years ago, saying attempts to make people hate him will not work. While accepting that his words could have been better expressed, he said it was unfair for his brother to use petty tactics against him. Mr P also claimed that Rudeboy had previously mocked him for dancing at his age, and said he was tired of staying silent. He stated that going forward, he would respond with the same energy he receives.
